Wow !! Only 5 yachts entered the Fife Regatta at Dalgety Bay on 24/25 July. 2 from PEYC in Div 1 and 3 from DBSC in Div 2.
Pretty poor turnout and it seems hardly worth the club's efforts to organise a 5 race
regatta if only 5 boats enter.
If you have any views on this matter either you can post comments here.

We didn't enter this year primarily because of work commitments that weekend.
ReplyDeleteWe entered last year (2009) to again a poor turnout. In saying that, we found that some of the course management meant that some windward/leeward races races were more or less two fetches. During the last race, the rope at the leeward mark was not secure and was floating 3 to 4 boat lengths from the mark itself making round marking difficult. This did not inspire confidence.
In terms of making this event more successful, I am not sure what the answer is. The only reason I know the event was on was because it appeared in the PEYC handbook. I saw no other adverts apart from that. Given that there is now a reasonable fleet of 707s at PEYC, RFYC and DBSC (or so I believe), maybe targetting these groups may prove beneficial
Any thoughts on time of year held and format improvements greatly appreciated, so please let us know so we can take action to address. We want to make changes to address.
ReplyDeleteThe main reason was that we were on holiday otherwise we might have taken part.
ReplyDeleteI would agree that publicity was limited - this is true of a number of events around the Forth. Information would be useful not just about the race formats but also the social/berthing arrangements.
We did sail in it (although I was only able to sail on the Saturday). I don't think that I could criticise any of the race management, true beats, square line etc and I'd like to thank the guys on the committee boat, mark boats etc for their efforts.
ReplyDeleteThere was little or no publicity - we had to scratch around to find entry forms, NoR, SIs which didn't even appear to be on DBSC's own website.
Interesting that this Regatta could only attract 5 entrants whilst the annual Fife interclub, challenge - The BAD Cup - had 22 entrants.......
ReplyDeleteWhat was the attraction of this event over the Fife Regatta ?
The interclub competition, the white sail restriction, the fact that the event entailed one short, friendly (yet competitive) race on a Sunday afternoon, etc. etc.
Anyone else suspect we need to rethink our regatta structures ?
I was talking to some members at Port Edgar last night about this who expressed the view that one of the issues with the Fife Regatta is that DBSC race management over the last couple of years leaves a lot to be desired. In previous years there have been problems with for example: 1. not being bothered to reset the course and line when there is a wind shift 2.marker buoys tackle being too easily snagged around keels. This perception was not helped by last weekends 4 inches when a course was set into tide and a light wind resulting in both of the first two legs being against the tide. There was also concern that the race was stopped far too early. Why wasn't a downwind down-tide start set (as in some previous years)? This would have ensured the first leg and most of the second leg and first beat(after the tide turned) to be with tide.Indeed using the shorter course which was largely cross tide and wind would also have been preferable?
